VENOM & ANTIVENOM

VENOM

EAVS has a brand new laboratory located on the Watamu Reptile Centre. At the laboratory, we milk most venomous snakes found in Kenya and we have a large collection of preserved specimens. Visitors of the Watamu Reptile Centre are welcome to take a look inside and can attend one of our milking sessions.

Venom is a highly modified saliva and contains different types of peptides, enzymes, and toxins. This saliva is highly complex and venom composition differs per region and even individual snake. Snakes use venom to immobilize, kill and digest prey and is injected with the use of fangs.

Worldwide, there are about 3000 species of snakes, of which 600 are venomous. Only about 200 of these are able to kill or significantly harm humans. Of these 600 venomous snakes, 48 are found in Eastern Africa and only 23 are known to have caused fatalities.
